Her journey began in the textiles industry, where she studied and worked in textile and surface design. After years in the industry, she ran her own gallery, curating diverse artworks and gaining exposure to various artistic disciplines.
Her experiences during this time led her to teach herself ceramics, embarking on a new path that blended her textile sensibilities with three-dimensional forms. Her practice now encompasses playful ceramic components combined with found materials, resulting in hand-built stoneware sculptural forms with removable inserts. She incorporates botanical elements into her work using materials collected from her extensive garden, and creates layered, textured paintings in mixed media on canvas or board.
Over time, her work has evolved into semi-abstract, larger-scale forms that concentrate on the interplay of form and surface qualities. Inspired by the emotions evoked by specific landscapes, she translates these feelings into tactile artworks that invite exploration. Her pieces reflect a deep connection to nature and a continuous dialogue between materials and emotions.
Shirley’s work is exhibited in galleries across Britain, earning acclaim for her innovative approach and the seamless fusion of textures and form.
