“My paintings are a result of looking, drawing, observing colour, texture and line. Within the layers are emotional reactions of how I feel either at the time of observation or at the time of recreating“

Currently, Shirley Vauvelle is working with oils, acrylics, and mixed media on canvas or board, creating expressive abstract and semi-abstract paintings. Her process involves applying multiple layers of paint, which are then rubbed away, re-applied, and painted over. She draws into wet paint, allowing for spontaneous mark-making and textural depth. While her compositions often begin with sketchbook drawings inspired by landscapes and natural forms, these serve merely as faint starting points. The paintings evolve organically, often leading her to places entirely different from where she began. Occasionally, a piece resonates deeply, feeling just right, and invites prolonged contemplation.

Shirley utilizes rhythmic mark-making using handmade tools, a variety of brushes, and any objects available in her studio that help evoke the desired emotion or mood. This intuitive approach allows her to explore and express the interplay of color, form, and texture. The result is a body of work that is both dynamic and contemplative, reflecting her continuous exploration of materials and the natural world.
